过去进行时与when和while引导的时间状语连用

过去进行时常和when, while 引导的时间状语连用，构成复合句。

My mother was cooking when I got home.

我母亲正在做饭，这时我到了家。

My father was watching TV while my mother was doing cleaning.

（那时）我父亲在看电视，我母亲在清扫卫生

一、when与while的区别

在when引导的时间状语从句中，谓语动词可以是延续性动词，也可以是非延续性动词。而在while引导的时间状语从句中，谓语动词必须是延续性动词。

We were talking when the teacher came in.

我们正在交谈，这时老师进来了。

They arrived when/while we were having dinner.

当我们正在吃晚饭时，他们到了。

二、when引导的时间状语从句与主句的时态

I was walking in the street when the accident happened.

我正在街上散步，这时这起交通事故发生了。

The accident happened when I was walking in the street.

当我正在街上散步时，这起事故发生了。

[总结]

能够延续的动词用过去进行时，不能延续的动词用一般过去时。

三、while 引导的时间状语从句与主句的时态

I saw the accident while I was walking on the road.

当我正在街上散步时，我看见了这起交通事故。

My mother was watching TV while my father was reading newspapers.

我母亲在电视，我父亲在读报纸。

[总结]

当强调两个动作同时进行时，主句和while从句都用过去进行时。

Alice: Yes, at about four o ’clock yesterday afternoon, I was reading a book in the sitting room. I heard a strange sound from the next room. I went in to look and saw my cat, Pete. He was looking into the fish bowl and trying to get a fish from the bowl!

News reader: And then what happened?

Alice: The fish bowl fell on Pete! I went to pick him up because he doesn ’t like water. I took him to the bathroom and dried him!

1 A terrible accident happened at three o ’clock this afternoon on the motorway between London and Cambridge.

2 James Brown was driving too fast along the road.

3 He was not watching the traffic in front of him.

4 The accident happened because the car in front of him slowed down to avoid a rabbit that was running across the road.
